The 1961 Chevrolet Corvette is a gorgeous car. I wanted to start this article off by saying that right off the bat because for me, that is the best part about this car. The 1961 body is one of the best American cars of all time and I will always stand by that assertion. Now that I have made that point though let's actually start the article.
I was browsing through Bring a Trailer, as I usually do, when I came across a title that certainly grabbed my attention. It said that someone was selling a LS7-swapped Chevy Corvette. To add to that, it was a 1961 Chevy Corvette. Of course I clicked and was pleasantly surprised as it turned out not to be an old beat-up model or something like that but rather an actual 1961 LS7 swap Corvette in great condition!
So, I am going to start with talking about the engine in this article for those who do not know what the LS7 is. The LS7 is what they call a 'crate engine'. This means that it is an engine that you can purchase and then use in a number of different vehicles. The LS7 has been around for a while and has become easily the most popular crate engine out there. This is for a few reasons, the first of which is its price.
The LS7 is only about $15,000 which, for a performance engine, is a great price. Now, the best part is actually the specs though. The LS7 will create 503 hp out of the box and create a whopping 470 lb-ft of torque. Pair this with the ease of installation and the fact that it will pretty much work with any car and transmission and you have yourself a legend of an engine.
So, this 1961 Chevy Corvette has had it's original engine replaced with a Chevy LS7 engine. The engine has its out of box specs but for this car, that is quite a lot. The car was fast in its day, but over the years it has become a bit dated. Switching in a new engine is a way to keep the car drivable while still keeping its perfect looks. That's the next thing that it worth mentioning though, the looks on this car are just spectacular!
When you think of American cars, you usually will think big, fast, and loud. It is not often that you see an American car that will think, "wow, that's classy!". However, it is this 1961 Chevy Corvette that does just that. The car still looks American. It still looks like a Corvette. However, this one has a sleek design that features lots of flowing design lines that really fit with a more classy aesthetic!
The car has a low front grill that is almost topped by two sets of headlights. The headlights form the running lines that lead all the way back to the sleek and sloping rear of the car. The rear of the car is also quite a marvel. It is sloped to a point where the bottom meets the top and creates a very sharp and windswept look that makes the car look like it will do a thousand miles per hour!
In my opinion, this is the type of poster car that gets kids into classic cars. This is the type of car that you see drive by and immediately think, "damn, I wish I was driving that instead." I have actually heard it be called a rolling piece of art and honestly I have to completely agree. It totally fits that description and is a complete head turner.
If I had the available funds, I would bid on this car immediately! It has all the traits of a classic American highway cruiser! It has a big engine, a sleek design, and it is a convertible. Yep, I haven't yet mentioned that but it is actually a convertible which, in my opinion, makes the car that much cooler. Imagine just cruising in this thing on a warm summer day, sounds like a dream doesn't it?
