- Dear Reader, We have a new website! You can check it out by clicking here: 1969 Inc. -Introduction
Anyone who is a car person will understand that taking photos of your car is one of the most fun and important things that car fans do. It allows us to share our passions for vehicles with each other and with others on social media! It can also be a great past-time as taking photos of your car can really be a lot of fun! However, it is also important that you take good photos of your car! Nobody wants to take lousy photos and so in this article we will be helping you to take some better car photos! If you have been reading 1969 Inc. articles for a while, you will know that we did an article about this previously! This article will feature new tips and some new advice to get your car photography game into gear!
#1 - Get Low!When taking pictures of your car, one of the most important things to think about is perspective. Where you take the photo from can change the entire look and feel of the photo! Often, people tend to ignore this aspect of taking photos and, when they whip out their phone, they just snap a quick picture and think its alright. However, this tip will only take you a second longer and is completely worth it!
Next time you go to take a photo, consider getting a little lower. This will make your car look a lot sportier and a lot more aggressive, which is often what you want to be going for. Just a simple squat will allow you to create a new perspective on your car that will add a lot of character and feel to the photo that you would not normally get if you were taking the photo from a higher position.
If you go online and take a look at car photos, you will see that most often, photographers will get lowers to take the photo from a lower perspective. This is exactly what you should be doing when taking photos of your own car! It should be noted though that this tip does not always apply and there are times that you do not want to get lower. For example, if you have an off-road vehicle you should take the photo from a higher point of view.
#2 - Tire Shine!
The last tip applied more to sports cars than anything else, but this tip applies to every car. If you have ever worked at a dealership, you will know that they use a thing called 'Tire Shine' to make the tires look, well, shinier. This makes the car look better overall and helps them sell more cars. Seeing as how this method literally works to sell cars, I think that it is safe to say it would also work as a way to take better photos.
However, I am not telling you to go buy tire shine. If you already have some, that's great! But, you can usually achieve the same effect with some household cleaners or, if you take the photo before it dries, water! The water or cleaners will make your tires a lot more shiny and a lot blacker which creates a beautiful contrast on most cars. It also adds the effect of making your car look cleaner as the wheels are black instead of muddy.
This method works best for static photos, or photos where the car is not moving. Just apply a little tire shine to the tires and boom, your car will look that much better! You also will not have to wash the tire shine off after as it should come off with normal use of your car. Now, let's move on to the final tip of this article!
#3 - Lighting!Taking car photos is a lot about the lighting. If you have good lighting, you will end up taking a great photo but if you don't, your photos will end up looking pretty lousy! So, what's the best lighting? Well, that's up to you, but there are a few things to keep in mind when trying to pick the lighting out for a good car photo.
The first thing to remember is contrast. If you have a dark car, don't take a picture of it in dark lighting or you won't be able to see anything! If you have a lighter and more reflective car, maybe don't take photos of it in direct sunlight as you may end up blinding the camera. You often want the details on the car to be seen without blinding the viewer of the photo. Just remember that and you will be okay when choosing your lighting.
